Route 06

The Wild West

Urumqi · Turpan · Kashgar

3Stops
8Nights

Eight nights at the other end of the country.

Lamb turning on iron skewers at six in the morning. Mud‑brick lanes where the signs are in Arabic script rather than Mandarin. A bazaar filled with spice, silk and jade, carrying the atmosphere of Central Asia deep into western China.

Then the landscape opens. Turpan sits 154 metres below sea level, its vineyards fed by snowmelt carried underground through an ancient karez system. Nearby, the ruins of Gaochang slowly dissolve into the desert beneath the Flaming Mountains.

Kashgar brings the strongest sense of arrival: old lanes, Uyghur neighbourhoods, the Id Kah Mosque at dusk, and a city whose cultural landscape feels worlds away from the China most travellers know.

Eight nights, three stops, and a journey that feels less like travelling across China than crossing into another geographic and cultural world.

The Journey

Urumqi to Kashgar — west through Xinjiang, the real frontier.

You want somewhere genuinely different.

For travellers who have already seen Beijing and Shanghai and want something far less familiar. This is a route for people drawn to Central Asian food, architecture, languages, markets and landscapes — and to the feeling of reaching China’s far western frontier on a train ticket.

What You’ll See

  • Urumqi – the gateway to Central Asia and the Xinjiang Museum.
  • Turpan – the Flaming Mountain, the karez irrigation system, and the ghost city of Gaochang.
  • Kashgar – the Id Kah Mosque, the Sunday Bazaar, and the old city’s mud‑brick lanes.

Xinjiang runs on a different rhythm — so we chose hotels that do too.

Xinjiang isn’t Sichuan or Guangdong. Registration for foreign guests is stricter here, and a boutique stay that’s flawless in Chengdu can turn into a paperwork headache in Kashgar. So for this route only, we chose established domestic premium chains instead of independent boutiques — not because Xinjiang lacks character, but so you spend your first hour in each city at the bazaar, not at the front desk.

  • Urumqi: A reliable chain hotel right at the Grand Bazaar — walk out the door into the night markets and spice stalls.
  • Turpan: A quiet chain property next to the Turpan Museum, with easy taxi runs out to the karez irrigation tunnels and the Flaming Mountains.
  • Kashgar: A flagship chain hotel inside the historic Kunlun Tower, minutes from Kashgar’s Old City and Id Kah Square.
