The ancient Silk Road city at the base of the Pamirs — continuously inhabited for more than two thousand years. The largest preserved Islamic old city in China: mud-brick lanes, carved wooden balconies, the Id Kah Mosque at the centre.
The Sunday livestock market has operated for centuries without pause. Walk the old city at 6am before the heat arrives.
