The Problem With Most China Guides
Most travel content on China is written by someone who flew in for a week, took good photos, and wrote a blog post. “Stay somewhere central.” “Try the local specialty.” Advice that could apply to any city on earth, dressed up to look specific.
The gap shows up the moment you land. Your VPN doesn’t connect. Alipay won’t verify your foreign card. You’re standing at a train station trying to book a ticket with a passport instead of a Chinese ID, and the guide that told you to “take the train” never explained how.
Why I Built ROAM
I’ve spent years traveling across China, Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, and Southeast Asia — not as a tourist passing through, but going back to the same cities and regions enough times to know things a five-minute search won’t tell you:
- Which hotel room actually faces the view worth paying for, and which one just claims to.
- Which time of day changes a landmark from a photo everyone has to one nobody else is standing in front of.
- How the apps, payments, and booking systems actually work for a foreign traveller, not just in theory.
On top of that: I trained formally in tourism and worked internships in transport operations and guided travel planning. That combination is the whole premise of ROAM — the ground-level specificity of someone who’s actually been there, backed by an understanding of how the travel industry works, and where it usually cuts corners.
