Route 03

The Silk Road

Xi’an · Lanzhou · Zhangye · Jiayuguan · Dunhuang

5Stops
12Nights

One direction. One ancient corridor.

The journey starts in Xi’an, the old imperial capital and eastern gateway to the Silk Road. From there, everything gradually pulls west. Lanzhou follows the Yellow River, before the cities begin to thin out and Gansu opens into wider skies and harsher terrain. In Zhangye, the Rainbow Mountains bring a sudden burst of colour. Jiayuguan marks the western edge of the Great Wall, where the country feels increasingly distant from the China you know from the east. Then Dunhuang: desert, dunes and the Mogao Caves, where the Silk Road finally becomes tangible.

This is the route for travellers who want history to unfold through geography. Every stop takes you further west, without backtracking, until the urban landscape gives way to mountains, desert and one of the world’s great archaeological sites.

Five stops. Twelve nights. A journey across the ancient corridor that once connected China with the rest of the world.

The Journey

Xi’an to Dunhuang — west along the ancient Silk Road, without backtracking.

You want to follow the story.

For travellers drawn to history, archaeology, dramatic landscapes and journeys with a clear sense of progression. The appeal is not simply what each place contains, but how each stop changes the one that comes next — until you arrive at the far western edge of the ancient route.

What You’ll See

  • Xi’an — the Terracotta Warriors, ancient city walls and the starting point of the Silk Road.
  • Lanzhou — the Yellow River, hand-pulled beef noodles and a city shaped by the corridor running west.
  • Zhangye — the extraordinary Danxia Rainbow Mountains, best experienced early in the day.
  • Jiayuguan — the western end of the Ming Great Wall, standing alone against the Gobi landscape.
  • Dunhuang — the Mogao Caves, desert dunes and the final, atmospheric stop on the route.

Curated Design & Strategic Comfort

We mix heritage courtyards, boutique design lofts, and strategic lifestyle chains. In the eastern and central stops of this route — Xi’an, Lanzhou, and Zhangye — we choose independent, design-led, and heritage properties that define the character of the trip. For the final desert leg in Jiayuguan and Dunhuang, where boutique infrastructure is thin and foreign guest registration is complex, we switch to the Orange Hotel — a top-rated lifestyle chain. It’s not a compromise; it’s the mark of expert curation. You get character where it matters, and guaranteed comfort where you need it.

  • Xi’an: A refined, centrally located boutique stay positioned for exploring both the ancient City Walls and the vibrant Muslim Quarter.
  • Lanzhou: A sleek lifestyle property along the Yellow River corridor, optimized for quick access to the high-speed rail hub and city noodle spots.
  • Zhangye: A traditional quadrangle courtyard stay blending classic Chinese architecture with quiet, atmospheric outdoor seating near the historic center.
  • Jiayuguan: The Orange Hotel — ranked the #1 rated property in the city, offering modern, spotless rooms, reliable service, and a prime location near the Datang Food Street and the train station.
  • Dunhuang (2 curated options): Choose between the Orange Hotel — a stylish, modern base right by the legendary Dunhuang Night Market — or an immersive desert glamping experience set against the Mingsha Sand Dunes for stargazing under desert skies.
