Island Time
Haikou · Sanya
Two sides of a tropical China.
Hainan is China at its most tropical, but the island is more interesting when you look beyond the resorts. Start in Haikou, where arcaded streets, local markets and southern Chinese food give the trip a distinctly urban beginning. Then head south to Sanya, where the scenery shifts completely — turquoise water, long beaches and a slower rhythm by the coast.
It is the shortest ROAM route, deliberately so. Two cities, six nights, and enough time in each to settle into the place rather than constantly packing and moving on. Haikou gives you the culture; Sanya gives you the reset.
Two stops. Six nights. A short, slow journey through tropical China.
The Journey
Haikou to Sanya — from historic streets and local markets to tropical coastline.
You want beach time with some substance.
For travellers who want a genuine tropical break without spending the whole trip inside a resort. Haikou brings neighbourhoods, food and everyday island life; Sanya brings the coastline, swimming and the space to slow down. Together, they make Hainan feel like more than just a beach stop.
What You’ll See
- Haikou — Qilou Old Street, local food markets and the atmospheric arcades of the historic city centre.
- Haikou food scene — Hainanese dishes, fresh seafood, coconut-based flavours and the local breakfast culture.
- Sanya — tropical coastline, palm-lined beaches and the waters of the South China Sea.
- Yalong Bay — clear water, long beaches and one of the island’s most scenic stretches of coastline.
- A slower finish — fewer transfers, more time outside and enough flexibility to let the final days breathe.
