Days 6–8 · Zhangjiajie
Sandstone pillars rise hundreds of metres through the mist — the landscape that inspired the visual world of Avatar. The key here is timing: the park opens early, the morning atmosphere is often the most dramatic, and your order of movement matters.
Exact route: Be at the cable car entrance by 8:00 AM. Go straight to the Avatar Hallelujah Mountain viewpoint on the Yuanjiajie plateau before the clouds burn off. For a quieter section, continue towards Tianzi Mountain in the park’s northeast. Take the Bailong Elevator down rather than building the day around the upward queue.
What to Eat
Tujia Smoked Pork · 腊肉
Cured over wood smoke and traditionally hung in mountain households. Dense, salty and intensely savoury, it is one of the regional flavours worth looking for while staying in the area.
Rice Tofu · 米豆腐
Soft tofu-like blocks made from rice rather than soy, usually served with chilli, garlic and other seasonings. A local speciality that belongs to this part of Hunan.
