The day

Great Wall — Mutianyu

One night near Mutianyu, just 300 metres from the Great Wall entrance. While other sections can become busy with coaches and tour groups, Mutianyu offers a calmer experience: a beautiful stay, an early start, and a stretch of the Wall where the landscape is the main event.

The exact hotel, the room to request, and why it makes sense for this stop.

What to Eat

Rainbow Trout (虹鳟鱼)

Huairou is famous for its freshwater rainbow trout, often grilled over charcoal or served in a sweet-sour sauce. The restaurants near the Mutianyu entrance keep live tanks, so you pick the fish and they cook it to order.

Farmer’s Table (农家菜)

Village restaurants serve simple, hearty dishes: stir-fried mountain greens, garlic eggplant, scrambled eggs with wild herbs, and hand-rolled corn pancakes (贴饼子). Try the braised pork with chestnuts—a local specialty that pairs well with the cool mountain air.
